Are these still getting returned for overheating issues?

They never got returned for legitimate heating issues. It's people just whining about a non-issue.

I'm sure they are. There is floor model at Best Buy that is running VERY HOT. Unsure why but definitely not a good sign

Not one return for overheating? Seriously though, I scanned through Best Buy's 1 star reviews and most were unrelated to overheating or complete failure, lot of complaints about drivers and quality control.

16% 1 or 2 star reviews is a bit high though.

It definitely runs hotter than last year's, but you do get better performance because of it. Still, that's what you get for buying a small gaming laptop like this. It's not going to run cool at all and will only be tolerable after doing the few tweaks G14 users have had to do for a couple years now.
On the plus side it'll double as a heater in the winter.

It might be a good deal, but there's an order of importance for a gaming laptop and #1 is thermals. It's a small screen. It's a literal hot mess to try and get a laptop like this, or really most of the laptops with top level CPU/CPU combinations.

This is supposed to be for travel. Get something bulky and with less heat generating products, play at reduced settings. Or get an extended warranty, you're going to need it.

I've had two. I returned the first one (2020 model, with RTX 2060) for overheating issues. The second one (2021 model, with RTX 3060), I sold to someone else after the return period because I had concerns about longevity due to heating issues, both absolute temps and the fact that it's blowing most of that heat over the display. Don't get me wrong, I loved this laptop, but if you don't turn the settings down on most games it runs super hot; and if you want to game on medium-to-low settings, it seems like you'd be better off getting a laptop with a lower-tier graphics card. And if your solution is to put it on a cooling pad, then you're compromising on the size and portability of a small gaming laptop. Finally, since the thermals aren't adequate, the fan has to kick into overdrive, so even though it may have a smaller/quieter fan than a bigger gaming laptop, it's running more often and at higher RPMs.

Edit: for clarity, this is only my experience with older models and not the one going for sale here. It's entirely possible that Asus might have ironed out some of these issues on the new model.

I bought this as a college laptop for my HS graduate kid from Best Buy. The first one I got was a dud. After initial setup, the screen went blank and could only output through HDMI. Took it in to get a replacement, Geek Squad guy said it was bad board.

Replacement seems good so far, no issues. It's fast as hell and the screen is excellent and bright. Build quality feels great and the design is nice. Only thing I don't like is the location of the power connection. The barrel plug is towards the middle on the left side due to the vent for the heat to escape. However it can use a USB-C PD cable to charge if you don't want to carry around the large power adapter, but I don't think you can run the full power of the video card off PD (don't quote me on that).

As far as heat, it does run warm when it's being tasked heavily. There are a lot of vents so it seems to be getting great heat dissipation. But the fans are relatively quiet and of course spin up when needed.

While it's no Ultrabook, it's lightweight for it's incredible power. Probably overkill for my kids needs but I got it on sale and I'm hoping it will last a few years.

Your "heating" issues are non-issues. This is the way they are intended to work.

Hypothetical: a new laptop has a feature where when it gets really hot, it channels that heat to an internal water reservoir and sprays you in the groin. I see this and say, "Hey, I don't like that, I don't want to get sprayed with hot water in the crotch." You see this and say, "But that's how it's supposed to work!" as you continue to refill the reservoir with fresh water and get skin grafts. Somehow, I still feel justified in my perspective.

Hmm...I thought the vapor chamber would help with the cooling. But I guess it's even more powerful than prior yrs.
