$129.99 is extremely cheap for a proper espresso machine, and this is a solid brand. If it works reliably it's a great deal, especially as it includes a milk frothing wand.

It's not a proper espresso machine by any means. Buy a Gaggia Classic Pro if you want to get into making espresso. At this price point, you might as well just get a nespresso pod machine or something.

What about it? It's not a real espresso machine either. It uses pressurized baskets.

I purchased a De' Longhi when I first got into espressos and it only made a few drinks before dying on me. I then purchased a Krupps and that machine only lasted me a few drinks too. I took proper maintenance care and used proper water too.

I ended up getting a semi-professional espresso machine and it's going strong for many years. It's several hundred dollars more though so not for everyone. If you want to save money, diving into the world of quality espressos is an expensive choice

It looks like this machine doesn't have a ball joint for the froth wand. It'll be difficult to achieve proper froth and therefore latte art with this because you won't be able to get the right angle

This is all gatekeeping.

For anyone who's never been a barista and never been a coffee aficionado, spending $400-500 (https://slickdeals.net/f/15813616-gaggia-classic-pro-espresso-machine-thunder-black-399-20-free-shipping) on a machine you're not even sure you'll use more than twice is a waste.

If you don't KNOW you'll be using this regularly, this is fine. Yes you'll probably get better lattes at your local independent coffee shop, but it's definitely a better coffee than drip. And it can be fun. You can learn how to grind and brew and steam without having to skip a car payment.

And yes, later you might even decide you want to upgrade, but at that point it won't be a waste, and you'll have enough experience to judge for yourself what you need.

I got a similar Delonghi (De'Longhi ECP3120 15 Bar Espresso... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTY9...b_ap_share )for $65 on a slickdeals post though, so I'd hold out for a better deal. It's been working fine for three years now.

Delonghi ec155m user here. If this uses the same portafilter, the pressurized basket can be converted to be more like non pressurized baskets. You can get pretty good results with a fine enough grind.

For an occasional espresso treat or seasonal hobby, this is a great machine for ~ $100

I consulted with my local barista and she said a machine like this is meant to be used simply with pre-ground coffee, which isn't the ideal choice for espresso but it's the most cost-effective.

Freshly-ground coffee beans and proper technique will likely cause it to fail within a few uses as it will create more gases and thus pressure than the machine is built to withstand.

That is like saying, I consulted a hairdresser and she/he feels I need a hair cut.

I have this machine... this is what I can tell you.

1. this is for you... ALWAYS use a coffee burr and get whole beans. And your local barista is an idiot.

This makes nice expresso's. Even though I have this machine which I use on the weekends... when I go to work I use a steam expresso maker and give myself 4 shoots. This machine comes with two pods, one for a single shoot and one for a double shoot.

If I do too fine and pack the coffee in... it could take way too long for it to come out... it is trial and error but not too difficult.

And I am too lazy to clean the froth wand (which is a bit of a bit##) and I usually microwave some skin milk for about 45 seconds and pour it in.

It does not come with a bottom and I use a small stainless steel measuring cup that fits underneath.

I paid $60 for my machine in the day... about 7ish years ago... could have been refurbished.

For those in the fence, keep in mind Costco will take this back at almost any point. The risk you take with a Costco purchase is genuinely just your time.

I don't have this unit and won't be getting one since I have a Breville barista pro, but I'd genuinely have given this a try at this price if I didn't. Worst case you have a return trip to Costco.
