Vortex's warranty can't be beat. Lifetime against anything. Drop them off the Burj Khalifa? Warrantied. Throw them into a glass blowers glory hole (giggity)? Covered. Shoot through the lens to see if your rifle scope is sighted in? Not covered. Just kidding, it's totally covered.

Vortex has good optics for the price. There are of course better for more, but obviously a $3,000 pair is going to beat out a $300 pair.

Keep in mind that although the 8x42's won't have as high a magnification as the 10x42's, you'll be able to see more in low light conditions. Divide the objective lens number with the magnification number to get the exit pupil number, the higher the number the more light is being delivered to your eye. The largest an average human pupil can dilate to is 7mm, so anything higher than that is kinda useless.

I hope this makes sense.

Edit: objective lens is the larger number. So 10x42 has an exit pupil of 4.2, the 8x42 has an exit pupil of 5.25. Higher number = more light = better for low light conditions.
there are 3 links. one for the diamondback, one for the 8x viper, one for the 10x viper.

the diamondback are 250 with an $80 coupon that is applied in your cart.

I don't know much about binoculars, what makes these a great deal? I've been considering getting a nice set for general use (e.g. looking at mountain lions after it attacked my dog or looking at stars with kids). Would this be good for that? Also, the tactical pen is the most aggressive pen I've ever seen and it makes me want it.

I have Vortex 10x42 Diamondback HD (bought last year with another deal). These are the best binoculars I have ever owned (I have had many). Definitely recommend.

Vortex is a top notch company. Great quality and a bullet proof warranty.

i have 8x32 HD. Too much purple fringe. Not sharp away from the center of the lens. Hate it. I use it with a phone adapter. I want to get a smaller more compact monocular to use with a phone.

It's a bit of a controversial question, but IMO 8x are better for the vast majority of cases. Everyone thinks "more magnification is better", but more magnification means smaller FOV (harder to locate what you're looking for and you have to move around to see all of closer objects), more bounce, and (as was already pointed out) a smaller exit pupil.

This is definitely a good price on the 8x42 Vipers, about as good as I've ever seen. And Vortex's warranty is as good as people are saying and they're quick to turn things around as well.

IMO you would be better served with a compact pair of binoculars. Hiking with these at 21-25oz is lot of weight (to me at least). After a few miles that will feel like 4-5lbs.

They would be ok for whale watching. If you want to treat yourself get a pair of image stabilizer binos for that. Smooth out the boat and your hands.

Think about sending it back under their warranty. That's the beauty of Vortex.
