Product Name: | Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Extreme Overview |
Product Description: | The Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Extreme ISO is an 8-input live production switcher for live streaming. It features an integrated control panel and has advanced broadcast features. In addition to live streaming using RTMP protocols, you can also output your program as if it was a webcam over USB. The switcher's ISO label means you can individually record each of the eight input videos as an MP4, as well as the program output via one of the USB Type-C ports. The switcher automatically generates a DaVinci Resolve project file, so you can clean it up and make changes later. This versatile switcher's eight independent HDMI inputs accept all popular HD signals up to 1080p60. Each input has discrete frame rate and format converters, and it supports re-syncing for seamless switching between a variety of pro and consumer cameras, game consoles, and computer feeds. Switch, add effects, color grade, and key in real time using the control surface's buttons, or via the software control panel. CCU functions are available for controlling Blackmagic Studio and URSA Mini/Broadcast/Micro Studio cameras from the switcher. The ATEM Mini Extreme ISO supports up to nine layers, with four upstream and two downstream keyers, up to four chroma keyers, up to four linear keyers, two DVE with borders and drop shadow, five pattern generators, and two color generators. Designed for live streaming or webcam, the Mini Extreme ISO has HDMI outputs to feed monitors and supports up to 16-screen multiview. |

1- It doesn't support streaming at under 1080p. We initially wanted to record for archiving at 1080 and broadcast at 720p, but no-can-do. Even if you choose to not record at all, it simply won't support lower than1080 broadcast. We ultimately just accepted that our broadcasting fees would increase (we have a fairly small budget, so every little bit matters).
2- The ISO recording is all or nothing. It'd be neat to have it only record Program plus one or two specific inputs, but nope. You have to go delete the unwanted recordings when done.
3- The video settings of the first couple inputs dictate certain behaviors of the Atem. If you want everything at 1080p30, make sure that's what you were getting from those two. I've run into other quirky behavior if all inputs don't match (which it can handle since it re-encodes), but match everything up and it's smooth sailing for hours on end.
4- Because of the above, boot order of your inputs matters.
5- Occasionally you need to unplug/replug USB because the computer doesn't get a video feed through it. Never had this issue when using internal capture cards. It's just something to keep an eye out for.
6- The onboard Media inventory only allows static photos. To work around this we bought a cheapie mp4 video player (20-30 bucks or so) that we can load up with our video resources and have them handy there connected to one of the inputs, just a little bit more cumbersome than if they were inside the Atem itself.
There's probably other little things, but don't get me wrong, this thing is a game changer when it comes to live broadcasting with a volunteer crew. Our production quality is leaps and bounds better than anything we ever dreamed of, and in a pinch we often get by without even turning on the desktop.

probably one of my highlights from b&h's sale… i couldn't find anything of interest

Yup, I have a small roland v1 that's a little cheaper than this. But for a few hundred more this atem is so much better and you have so many more options. This is a great buy for anyone who is into video production, live event production, streaming…it's an amazing piece of gear for an awesome price. Black magic does
tend to have a reputation for lower quality among the industry but, at least in my experience, whenever I've had a piece of gear of theirs fail, their fix was to replace it and customer service was/is amazing
Correct!

Awesome; thanks. It seems Amazon has also marked down the non-ISO Extreme to $910, though you'd be somewhat crazy not to pay an extra $85 to get the ISO recording.

I think, by reason of BMD's product differentiation model, they would not bring SDI to this product in favor of selling the Atem Television Studio / etc "professional" grade devices with SDI. I don't think the "mini" line of Atems is inline with a large enough consumer base who use SDI systems over HDMI.
As the previous reply said, it seems they're differentiating between desktop HDMI "mini"s and rackmount SDI. There are the new SDI-based Constellation HD models, but no ISO a recording, no encoding, no supersource…
