If you read one book before you die, make it this one. Be particularly selective of the translation you read.

Gasoline. I really hope they did not translate бензин as 'paraffin'

Not Pevear and Volokhonsky. Their other translations of Russian literature are of course highly-praised, but for this book I went with the Burgin and O'Connor interpretation. There are a couple of other translations. You might want to do your own research and pick the one that you think suits you best. A good place to start: https://www.reddit.com/r/books/co...on_should/

the first review on amazon (from 2014) is claimed to be by a native russian and he says the most authentic translation is by ginsburg?? now i'm confused

well the point may be moot anyway as there are no other translations this cheap and my frugality >> my pedantry.

To those concerned about all things Russian these days, the author was born in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Last I checked this was Keith Law's #1 novel of all time and that guy reads a lot of novels. It's always on interminable hold at my public library so happy to pick it up for $2.

I'm curious to see how this translation compares to Ginsburg (which I read years ago and found very good).
