They make "socks" that go over the filter and are basically the commercial version of this solution (with the same downside, of course).
The better solution is to use a cyclone dust separator in line with the hose when you know you're dealing with fine particles. This way, the filter never gets clogged to begin with and you aren't restricting flow.
BTW, if you are using (any) wet/dry vac, you can greatly extend the life of your filters by wrapping it with pantyhose (aka ladies' nylons). You can buy them cheap from the dollar store.
See pic (below). I have used my Ridgid vac for over a year and you can still see the blue color in the original filter!!!

I understand & appriciate what Slickdealer wherestheanykey is saying. Any time you obstruct the air flow (with a napkin, nylons, or even the original/stock pleated filter), it will be an added load that makes the motor work (slightly?) harder. I would argue that this stress is negligible over the lifetime of the vac.
Plus, I think RIDGID offers lifetime warranty on their wet/dry vacs. I've never had to use it, but searching on the net suggests that the folks that had to use the warranty - it was mostly painless process.

Probably will not fit the 4 gal vacuum, but should work with my 16 gal.
I haven't tried it yet, but have seen on SD posts that using a pantyhose on top of this filter helps prolong its life. In my 5gal, however, I have been using bags and the filter stays clean.
You mean you wrapped a towel outside of the filter and secure it with two rubber bands?
So you just tossed the towel and the filter is clean? If so…. genius lol

Except for the fact that it can stress the motor more. And I think they just meant they don't use a filter at all.

One question, these filters are reusable right, meaning they last forever? So what's the point in extending the life of the filter with the hose? Is it just to not have to deal with cleaning the filter (which I'd imagine is a pita), and instead just rip the hose off and toss it?
Edit: now that I think about it I think I've bought one of these before and it was unidentifiable after it's first use, and covered in debris…
