"any other short grain rice are all the same" makes no sense. Even if you don't think the different brands are different, there are several different cultivars of short grain rice in Japan, each with their own properties. That's kinda like saying Red Delicious or Honey Crisp, they're all just apples.
I'm Japanese and personally prefer Tamaki Gold, but Tamanishiki is my second favorite. That said, here in the SF Bay Area there are several Japanese grocery chains and Tamanishiki or Tamaki Gold goes on sale every few months for around $20-$25 for 15lb bags. It's also late summer now so we'll probably start seeing the new crop soon.

It is a personal choice. I like SOME of the Korean rice better than ca grown Japanese rice but my favorites are jp imported rice
