They've really jacked up the prices on the open-box models. Last summer I got a base 256GB open-box geek squad excellent for $663+tax. Now they want $824. Was during a similar $849.99 sale they had on the base $999 sku

$200 premium over the 256GB model is ridiculous. And unlike the M2, there is no significant performance penalty going with 256GB on the M1 models. Buy an external USB drive like the Samsung T7 instead, or an $80 1TB NVMe and throw it in either an external USB or TB3 enclosure. Yes it's a hassle to have an external appendage rather than internal storage but sometimes you have to accept compromises to not get ripped off.

Good point, but is the 256gb even available with the 8-core GPU?

I don't see any difference in GPU description between the 8GB/256GB or the 8GB/512GB models of M1 Air. It seems the only difference is in SSD capacity.

That's a hell of a deal.

I thought I had a steal of a deal finding one locally AS-IS with a MacOS installation problem 8/8/8/512 SSD (rose gold Frown) at $450 total (a little dirty but in mint condition with 5 charge cycles).

I got lucky and it cleaned up well and the MacOS install problem they had was a bad wifi network signal. When I got home it installed no problem. and I considered myself lucky to get my model at that price.

I'd gladly take open-box $585 with the 512 SSD with original box brand new and warranty any day of the week (taxes on top of that would still suck but I'd still pick it up no questions asked)

I couldn't tell you.

I found mine at a local Pawn Shop selling it AS-IS...

As in, you buy it the way it is. You might get lucky and fix it.

or you might get screwed and there's something wrong with it physically/hardware.

Might have a iCloud account/activation lock on it as well....

but I got lucky.

To the best of my knowledge, the 8-Core GPU was never offered with the 256GB option, only 512GB. Only the base version with the binned 7-Core GPU offered the 256GB hard drive.

It is still show 7 core GPU for the one in Apple.com.

What do you mean? The M1 in this laptop has a 8-core GPU. I have the very same laptop.

Apple stopped offering the M1 Air with 8-core GPU once the M2 Air was introduced.

Don't be fooled, this is NOT "upgraded", its the normal M1 chip design. The 7 core GPU models are the handicapped versions that didn't pass their binning process... if any more cores failed the test, they get scrapped, but Apple in thier money grabbing greed decided to keep the ones that have one failed GPU core, and lock it out of the OS, so they don't go to waste. The end user is supposed to be happy about it, but you're getting a broken CPU/GPU and they're charging you the base price for it, when it should be the 8/8 as the actual base.
This model is the upper end 2020 $1249 with 8/8/512. Yes, it does have 8-core GPU and "faster" ssd over the M2. Anyone who says anything different is considered dumb.

It was $999 a few days with my best buy rewards, which was a steal.
