FWIW my experience with the "pro"-like batteries, specifically the Sanyo-branded eneloop high capacity AAA, has not been good. I use the Panasonic charger but nearly all my pro batteries (eight or more) have got to the point where the charge error light starts flashing after a short period of time. Nowhere near the rated number of cycles, I'd say a few dozen. No unusual application, just portable digital electronics.

This charger is very sensitive. I would have thrown out a lot of batteries if I hadn't also bought an Eastshine S2 when I first started using rechargeables. If it still charges fine in the Eastshine, they're still good. Sometimes the Eastshine will stop charging at 1.38v and I'll have to restart it. The indication for an actual dead battery is if spent batteries charge to 1.50v in a questionably short amount of time (i.e. 1 hour for an AA) or if the charger can't tell if it's an NIMH or LiOn and keeps flipping back and forth, then they're really dead.

The other problem is if a battery is drained too much (easy to accidentally do with a motion sensor light or LED candle that doesn't have low-voltage cutoff), the Eastshine will throw an Err but sometimes the Panasonic will actually accept it. Otherwise you have to 'short circuit' it with another battery for a few moments to get a charge back into it. I actually bought a cheap USB 2AA/AAA charger that has no circuitry other than a trickle charge circuit so it doesn't know or complain if a battery is bad or dead or overspent and leave it in there for 30 seconds, then the Eastshine will accept it again.

These are likely Chinese made 'eneloops', and a lot of people have reported problems with them. Here's a review linking to the ORIGINAL Japanese made quality Eneloop batteries, which are still made at the same factory in Japan, but are now badged "Fujitsu Low Self Discharge". 8 pack just a little under $3 each.

Thanks. A lot could have changed in 7 years, though. And these are not sold by Amazon.

BTW my batteries that have the charging issue are all Sanyo branded, "made in Japan." While they are black and "eneloop high capacity" ("min 900 mAh") they are not labeled the same as these (pro). I updated my post above.

OMG so true. I have 2 AA Sanyo Pro here… bought years ago and really did not use it much. Maybe < 10 cycles. I just got a new Panasonic charger and some new regular eneloops. The Panasonic charger would not charge and flash red error. Then I remembered, that I thought my Apple-branded AA charger also showed flashing errors with these — that's why I put those away. The Apple charger (Sanyo white label) are charging the new regular eneloop fine.
