Remember not to thai too many on while you're there, you may say phuket and do something you'll regret
It's probably a stretch but not as far fetched as you might think. When I was there in August 2019 I stayed at Swissotel in Phuket for a little over $40/night. No meals included. Hotels were pretty cheap, food oddly enough wasn't that cheap (probably was taken advantage of being a tourist), transportation was ridiculous though compared to everything else.

Where is the China southern airlines when I need it? Last time I had $420 rt from jfk booked. Had to cancel because of covid. I believe the stop over was in Wuhan
Really? Because it's my understanding that Thailand averages 30 million tourist a year. So I guess someone said let's go to Thailand.
You call it "third world," but by going there and seeing how well the living is, it might make you question your assumptions about how wonderful the "First World" is. One of the great things about travel is if you plan well and combine it with an open mind and clear observation you can learn a lot about yourself, your culture, and the rest of the world and other people.
