Also, wouldn't speed be dependent on the OS first and foremost? I didn't think apps even had to be tweaked to utilize the speeds.

I guess OS has something to do with it, but the general processing power of the machine and efficiency of the code certainly. I'm sure a lot of code is still optimized for use with quirks of clackers. DirectStorage makes better use of SSDs, but it doesn't change the relative advantage of a quick drive.
But to answer your question, yeah, newer tech, even if marginally beneficial, tends to push down the prices of older stuff. But, there's a general economic slowing happening as well.
Their Flash is fine by the way if that's the concern.
