PPIs were never intended for long-term use. They're scary drugs. Research the long-term side effects. that website you listed doesn't even begin to touch them.

I'd rather take daily famotidine (40 to 80mg, depending on whether I take it once or twice that day). My gastroenterologist didn't object at all.
Actually, it depends on what you're treating. Typically in the hospital we don't use more than 40 mg daily or 20 mg twice a day. In some cases. it may warrant something different but for over the counter use, I wouldn't recommend more. If you have any kidney problems, I would also advise you caution when using this. If you know what your creatinine clearance is, you can ask a pharmacist to help you find the right dose.

If you are using this on a daily basis for more than 2 weeks, I would recommend you go see a doctor because your underlying acid reflux or heart burn may be caused by something that needs further evaluation.

Regards,

Clinical Pharmacist
Dosage is 1/day you should not take more than that!

A couple pennies less than last time. Stocking up for our cribber as we go through 10-20 tabs / day. Lots cheaper than UlcerGard.

Is this a standard treatment for ulcers? from what I understand, if you have heartburn 3 times a week a more for 3 weeks in a row, it should be time to consider a PPI, https://medlineplus.gov/ency/pati...000381.htm

Googling UlcerGard, it looks like that he's talking about a horse? Still not sure if that's a great idea, but I'll defer to the veterinarians on this...

Not standard treatment for ulcers. PPIs are standard. H2RAs (ie famotidine) are not. Heartburn however is a different story.

For regular symptoms, yes. If you have chronic gastritis or similar your doctor can prescribe a much higher dose.

It's also an antihistamine. Though it's for heartburn first and foremost, it can be used for allergies
