The alternatives to this are wag bags and catholes. Depending on the rules of the location you're camping at/hiking through, you may be able to use a cathole, which is a hole you dig with a shovel (multi-purpose!) and cover after you do your business (most locations require you to pack out your toilet paper, and be 200+ ft away from any water sources, campgrounds, etc.). A wag bag, on the other hand, typically requires a frame (although if you're crafty you can put a wag bag into a cathole or a collapsible wash basin, then take the wagbag with you). Personally, I prefer cathole+wagbag approach because I already carry a shovel (to level tent ground, use as hammer, use as machete, use as seat), and don't want to also carry a potty bucket. That may be less comfortable than a bucket though.
