The main downside to Pixel 4 (XL) is that 4G LTE networks are getting hyper congested.

Pixel 6a will give you C-Band on all three carriers (yes, even T-Mobile eventually will use it), and full 5G access on all three national carriers.

If it weren't for 5G, I'd take the Pixel 4 any day. But unless you're really rural, go with the Pixel 6a.

Too much money for an old phone that will stop getting updates soon. It was good in its time though.

Even security updates are not guaranteed after next month.

What's interesting is Nilay Patel from the verge said the opposite. That he turned off 5G on the iPhone 14 pro due to congestion and went back to LTE

I'm around cellular engineers all day. Patel is an attorney, not an engineer - so he's sharing one-off experiences. Congestion is area-specific. But regardless, if you don't have 5G, you can't use it to fight congestion. With an LTE-only device, you are tying your hand behind your back.

Disabling 5G causes a radio reset, that forces the network to assign the phone a new call channel. Often times, this is less congested. That's why Patel experienced what he did. You could have taken a 5G phone, put it in airplane mode, and turned it off, and gotten the same speed boost (or better).

Of course thousands will read what he said, versus the 50 that read this post. Let false stigma reign.

That is really good to know, thanks for taking the time to reply. I had this issue yesterday at school where my 5G wasn't working, should have just reset with airplane mode

Pixel 3 had less reliable storage chips. It wasn't the updates that killed them, it was the storage chips wearing out.

This was fixed in Pixel 4 and newer. It was fixed in 3a, but 3a has really slow storage as a result of early efforts to remedy the problem.

My regular pixel 3 was bricked by an update but my 3XL is still going strong. Haven't tried to stop updates though maybe I should, as I don't trust them.

I'm in Bay Area of N. Cal and with traveling all over the West Coast, have never experienced 4G LTE "congestion". I do hear complaints from people who have 5G phones about call quality and less battery life.

My Pixel 3 is a beast and never had a problem, ever. Running Android 12 just fine.

Well documented phenomenon: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9356336

"Abstract: Despite widespread LTE deployment, coverage does not necessarily translate to usable service. Even in well-provisioned urban networks, unusually high usage (such as during a public event or after a natural disaster) can lead to congestion that makes the LTE service difficult, if not impossible, to use, even if the user is solidly within the coverage area."

You probably have, and just didn't realize it.

Only thing that has changed recently is the networks are oversold post pandemic.

Bay Area also is not representational, having way more macro sites than just about anywhere else in America.

Okay? I travel all over the West Coast and can easily spot LTE congestion. Post on any carrier subreddit and ask if it is a real thing.

It is.

Not specific to the 4XL, but anyone jumped to GrapheneOS?

I'm tempted on these older Pixel deals, to possibly explore GrapheneOS.
