This post had me check google flights - just bought tix for Thanksgiving week (Fri, Nov 25 to Fri, Dec 2) on UA for $543, seat selection and checked bag included.
The Yen is dropping big time vs the dollar, so your exchange rate should be advantageous.

Is Japan fully opened or they still only allow guided tourism via travel packages?

Last time I heard about one week ago, Japan was only accepting 50000 tourists per day but they needed to book flights through travel agents. However, I read the article stating Japan can be open to all tourists without Visa as early as 10/1. I am hoping that happens.

They'll be fully open on 10/11 to most countries.

Define fully opened.

Regarding US to Japan trips:

Are there any shots questions?

Are any tests required?

Self-guided tours are OK?

I think "fully open" means there's not limit on how many tourists can be allowed to enter Japan and no Visa is required to the countries that did not require before. And also, no requirement for airplane tickets needed to be booked through travel agents.
