12.9 wins...
Screen-quality awesomeness, especially for watching movies
Screen-size for reading magazines (in their original layout), reading sheet music (especially orchestral), and for running apps side-by-side
Keyboard size (less cramped)
11 wins...
Price (typically $200 cheaper on sale)
Comfort in carrying & holding (size and weight)
I own the M1 12.9 and... I have found it tiring / uncomfortable to hold for anything more than 10-15 minutes at a time. But it's awesome for watching TV shows / movies, and awesome (if insanely, ridiculously overpowered) for rendering sheet music.
If and when Apple sells a less-crazy-powerful-but-cheaper 12+ inch tablet, I'll probably trade down. I don't use even 10% of the power of this thing and am frankly kinda embarrassed I got it mostly for magazine & music reading. Related: I probably should check out / should have checked out Samsung alternatives at this size.

Agree.
Thinking of this as getting a m1 MBA with pro screen, but clunckier and very limited OS. Although with IOS 16 + external monitor, can be a very sweet casual computing set up!
If 11" m1 iPad Pro ever gets for $599 I'll have to bite…
I LOVE the 12.9 variant and have tried very hard to accept the trade offs of it portability, weight and $$ but I just can't. All it is too much especially with the accessories.
All iPad gives user the near exact experience in terms of consumption so I rather spend less $ and use it comfortably so the 11 inches variant is the well balance one esp for the $599 price point.
[[My quirk below when using
11" variant:
I find the Portrait mode more appealing to view for basic media consumption like watching Slickdeals rant video and reading comments located below the video at the same time) and easier to read along the verbiage than in landscape. The less information to follow in condense format, the better to follow along.
Landscape mode to me is more toward mid range productivity between apps like sketching, note takings, check and balance $ from the bank app while checking spreadsheet and email and stuff like that]]
I opted for the 11 inch Pro M2 variant vs the M1 Air due to extra speakers and extra storage. I really like the hover pencil a lot! Its cool! Not a gimmick at all as I can select and tap XYZ as shown on the screen while the pencil remains In air!
Logicial purchase vs emotional purchase. Gotta have both. Not one.
