"normal" TV's are a thing of the past. Manufacturers basically only sell TVs with a smart interface anymore. It does function basically how you say, except you can't just upgrade your external player when the TV gets too slow. These TVs can usually be set up as "tv only" and then you can use any external player you want.

So many TVs in this size/price category. When shopping for one, and wanting extended warranty, the prices are very tight between manufacturers.
LG, Samsung and several other brands on 'sale' at Best Buy, Walmart, Sam's club Costco, etc make the decision somewhat perplexing. Through December at least, my Citi card through Costco adds a couple years extended warranty for no additional charge - so that's something if you're a member.
