So now we're trying to figure out if we pick up the Ninja duo brew or this....

Did both functions break at once?
Yeah, the water pump stopped working, so both the k-cup and carafe stopped working.

I'm asking because I know there are some that scan the cups and make sure they're a specific brand. I'm not sure if that's still a thing or if they did away with that anti-competition practice

Yup, we never had a problem with any brands. We used Kirkland, Amazon Solimo, Pete's, San Francisco Bay, and a few others.
Honestly, the only memorable downside was that you could only program a time for the carafe, not the k-cup.

If my gripe won't be an issue for you, then this machine might be great for you. If you just want a coffee pot a few times a year, then you're probably better off buying a cheap one to go with a standalone k-cup machine.
Pros:
Making drip and K Cups in one unit is pretty awesome
It's been reliable
Has the 'strong' setting for k-cups which I like
No problem using any k-cup I've bought (not restricted to any specific brand) NOTE: that may have changed over the years, but true for mine
No scaling, but I always use fridge-filtered water, you should too if you have that option.
Cons:
THAT MOTHER F'ING CARAFE SPILLS WHEN YOU POUR!!! Seriously, look at any of the reviews on amazon. I had them ship me a 'revised' carafe. Still sucks.
I don't think it brews with hot enough water
If mine broke today, I'd purchase another one.
