CAT7 is shielded, so there is foil metal shielding wrapped around each of the 4 pairs covered with a copper mesh inside the outer jacket, so it is going to be stiffer than the CAT5/6 that everyone is used to using. The connectors are also metal wrapped to complete a ground link. You don't need these for normal device connections in your house, but if you are doing 10Gbps links, you do.
Bought the max of 4 to connect my nas and a couple other devices. Only time i went higher was a cat 8 in wall rated that i used to connect two wall jacks i installed, wasn't going to touch that one afterwards so wanted it a bit more robust
Pointless for the average consumer speeds

Is anything higher rating really needed for consumer home use? Debating on picking one up at this price.

This should be fine for consumer use. Should be able to support up to 10g ethernet. The only thing is these cables might be a little more stiff than cat 5e.

Got a few in December and they are for sure extremely rigid. They do work great though 3 bucks for the shielded cable is a dope deal

I almost just bought this. Then I saw one reviewer's photo of the back of his router. I have a similar router. The photo is of these cables trying to fit in a router with 4 Ethernet slots in a row. The design of these cables - the thickness of the ends - prevents these cables to fit next to each other. -or at least in that reviewer's photo.

Depends on your need.
If you only need 10Gbps Cat6A would work just fine, Cat6A is also available as STP(shielded) but not by default. Whereas Cat7 is shielded and can supports 10Gpbs and 40Gbps(under 15meter)

To add to this,

Cat7 is double shielded by default. If it's not double shielded, it's not cat7. Cat7 has a maximum length of 100 meters / 328 feet.

Cat8 is basically the same spec but made for datacenter use, which cuts the maximum length down to 30 meters / 98 feet. It can be both single shielded and double shielded.

If you are looking to futureproof some wallstuffing, cat8 should support 25gigabit and 40 gigabit ethernet. If you have lots of electric tools and other EMI garbage, cat7 is probably better.

Most home runs are under 100', thus you don't need the best cables to achieve 10gb assuming there isn't a lot of noise in the house.

You can even pull 10gbps across Cat5e of a distance up to 147ft. Most home runs aren't even close to that as you said. Obviously if given the choice, I'd still go with cat6.
