Some people say they sound great, some say they sound too bassy. ANC seems to be mediocre.

Comes with a pretty solid carrying case, folds up like Sony WH-1000XM4.

In researching ANC headphones, Yamaha never even came up, did not know they made a pair.
Been holding out for another sale on Sony MX4 (new or refurb), but these look interesting.
Anybody actually have any first-hand knowledge?

I read the rtings, SoundGuys, and What Hi-Fi reviews before buying them a couple of weeks ago for an upcoming long haul flight.
First thing I did was a FW update via the app, and I believe this addressed most of the negatives they found. Yes, one of the sound balancing modes makes them too nasty for my liking still - so I have it turned off!
The ANC works like a charm in my tests at home, but my LH flight isn't until Sunday, and they will be the true test. Tons of noise isolation via the cups on their own though.
Most important to me though is the sound quality... Defo better than anything else I've heard in the <$200 range.

How were they on the flight?

TU on the deal OP - it's hard to argue that headphones that were evaluated in Dec 2021 at $349 -- with a damn good review, as well, are not a great deal (brand new) at $130. You can compare these to XM4's if you want, but you won't even get refurbed XM'4 close to this price. Here is what online review mag WHAT Hi-Fi [whathifi.com] wrote about their audio performance:

Listening
It was immediately obvious that the sound here was of fine hi-fi quality in terms of detail and imaging, the spacious headshells assisting delivery of a realistic portrayal of voices and instruments, the highs smooth, the midrange rich, the bass full. Indeed the upper bass seemed perhaps too full.
We played a 1971 BBC John Peel recording of Led Zeppelin at the Paris Theatre in Lower Regent St, London, and such BBC sessions are famously lean and clinical. Yet a warm smear of bass surrounded John Paul Jones' lively runs through the more energetic portions of What Is And What Should Never Be, even though the overall sound was wonderfully expansive and real, the straightforward clarity of recording putting each of the four in their place (though with Bonham's drums not nearly forward enough in this reserved BBC mix).

Early Verdict
Although it may take some tweaking to get the right settings on these Yamaha cans, once you do you'll be pleased with the gorgeous audio with its clear headroom and ability to go loud without sacrifice. It lacks some of the premium features of its pricepoint competition, but focuses instead on the sound quality.

Pros
+Great sound quality
+ANC optimises audio
+Nice awareness mode
Cons
-Listening optimiser did little
-Slight bloat without ANC
Here is the review from Headfonics, as well:

IMAGING
The YH-E700A is one of the most balanced-sounding headphones I've ever reviewed. It is very linear across the board for all sound staging experiences.

The depth of field, height, width, and overall airiness are all damned near equal abundance. It is one of the most perfectly square-shaped feeling imaging experiences that I've ever used in any headphone.

Not one area of the imaging fights for dominance, every area is pretty much equal in heft and sizing. The sound staging sizing factors are all average though and do not extend into the tier of what I would call great imaging prowess.

SENNHEISER MOMENTUM 4 WIRELESS

The Yamaha YH-E700A has a significantly more sterile and purified feel. It houses a much thinner tonality. But it is also a more coherent feeling in physical imaging size and shape.

The software also adjusts the sound based on exterior sounds around you, while the Momentum 4 Wireless doesn't have the ability to do that.

The treble on the YH-E700A is more engaging and bright. The Momentum 4 Wireless has a significantly darker background to the sound void but is much softer in tone and physical impact from top to bottom. Also, the Momentum 4 Wireless is a small bass canon, while the YH-E700A is more of a treble master.

OUR VERDICT
The Yamaha YH-E700A is a very neutral and almost reference-sounding studio monitor intended for portable usage or for producers or music recording artists.

The experience is a hyper pure feeling, and enjoyably engaging on the treble side without going into painful territory. Overall, the YH-E700A is a great option for the price if you like a straight-up neutral performance from your audio gear.
