It was even cheaper recently (in the 70s) and the other comments about SMR being sh1t are valid.

Is that the format where if we add any file like even one file in it then it has to rewrite the entire drive thus making it so slow a process that it likely would eat up energy and ending up costing more in time and energy that unless we strictly use it only for once in a while scenario and then it breaks when we really need it rendering this being a pointless purchase?

It rewrites adjacent tracks so yeah, a lot more writing and it's slow if you are moving a lot of data around like you would in a NAS
