Wonder when mirrorless cameras will trickle down into the semi-pro segment, the Nikon D5xxx series is overdue for a successor

This was as low as $899 with the battery grip direct from Canon. Refurbished, but Canon refurbs are good as new, so even at the current $1260 price [canon.com] sans grip, I'd go with that over new from Amazon if I were in the market for an R.

id try to go to the store and try them out, whichever one feels right is the right one. They are both very capable cameras and you would be happy with either. If you're on a tight budget I'd lean Sony though because they have affordable third party lenses.

I have a Sony a7RIII, and use it mostly with canon EF mount lenses, it's frigging awesome. The EOS R I hear is a great camera, I missed out on the $900 refurb deal back in November. Most people I know (or see) that shoot professionally mostly use Sonys for livestreams, and photography on the side. Tamron FE mount lenses for Sony are really good now, they've come a long way and have a lot of options.
