It appears the golf option won't work without one, which is RIDICULOUS. Samsung phone UI is terrible, and I prefer the Pixel vastly over it. Every smart watch these days has compatibility with a ton of golf gps apps.(GHIN, GolfPad, etc).

I own it without a Samsung phone. The ECG function won't work and it many times wanted to force me to use the Samsung apps but other than the ECG and finding alternative apps/settings, I haven't had any trouble using it. It's a great watch, far superior to the first WearOS watch I used some years ago. Looks nice with the included band, though I did swap it out for a metal one since that is the look I wanted.
The Caddie app seems to load ok. It let me set up an account and loaded the nearest course, though I don't golf so I can't say if any functionality past that is missing without a Galaxy.

Smart Caddie premium membership is $100 for 3 years. So the included "Lifetime membership" is really the lifetime of the watch, and you hope it'll last 3 years.

Customers who purchased Galaxy Watch5 & Watch4 Golf Edition (SMART CADDIE Exclusive) cannot transfer it to the Galaxy Watch5 & Watch4 (SMART CADDIE Non-Exclusive).

FWIW, I have a Samsung Fold 4, watch 5 pro and Note22 for work. I am technically savvy and know how to adjust the settings and apps running in the background. I have great battery life on all my phones and watch. I use my phone to wirelessly charge my watch when I don't have the charging adapter.
It's the age old Android vs Apple debate. Both camps are loyal. And if you have to switch, the learning curve can be painful.
So don't unintelligentlly say all samsung phones are crap and other phones are amazing. Every mgf has pros and cons.

I have EPP, and after an "any watch" trade in($70), it comes to $160 before tax.
Also comes with a "free" extra watch band.
