my family of 5 had 200mbps for years without issue. unless you're doing online gaming it's probably plenty. the bigger question is upload speed for your data, zoom calls, etc. but download from netflix, loading websites etc, that's plenty. 1gig is all the rage because 'bigger is better' but most people never need anywhere close to 1gig

The 200Mbps speed is 'adequate' for most. Faster is certainly nicer - but is usually not a necessity.

A bigger concern with Comcast/Xfinity may be their 1.2TB/month data cap unless you pay an extra monthly fee for unlimited (usually $30/mo - but might be less here due to the offer already including the modem rental). It's not difficult to exceed that cap if you have two televisions often viewing streaming video content. Even without 4K.

The terms of this offer also state that the $50/mo price assumes a $10 autopay discount. Which applies only if you give them your bank account number for billing. If you use a credit card or debit card for payment then the monthly cost will be $55. If you don't want to use autopay then the monthly cost will be $60.

My neighbor's Comcast Xfinity modem/router broadcasts their WiFi plus the Comcast Xfinity WiFi hotspot. It's like having a WiFi terrorist living next door. Plus, people can search for Xfinity hotspots on the Xfinity website, and it shows their address along with a map.

If you must use their modem/router, please turn the WiFi hotspot off.

Also, remember that data caps are a scam.

When I last had Comcast service - last summer - it was not possible to disable the XFINITY/XFINITYWIFI networks broadcast by Comcast-provided modems. At least not from the modem's built-in web management page or from the Xfinity app. Has that changed?

There was also a hidden SSID that couldn't be disabled. IIRC that was for Xfinity's home security equipment (for those who were unfortunate enough to subscribe to that service - as I once was).

WiFi pollution.

Why would you want to disable it? It has no impact on your bandwidth and provides travellers in your area (e.g Xfinity Mobile) with a WiFi connection. Buy your own router if it's that big of a deal.

Why would you want to pay comcrap money AND pay for electricity to be their wifi provider?

ComCrap should be paying YOU

To reduce interference with other WiFi networks originating from my "good" router. With 5GHz WiFi-5 or WiFi-6, in particular, this can sometimes help the good router to select a 160Mhz DFS channel. But can also help with 2.4GHz.
