I am not sure. I was looking for binocs recently because I was taking a beach trip to a rental with a high balcony. I did not buy anything at the time (early March), but when I got back I ordered the Celestron 8x42 Nature DX because the price dropped from $120 to $79.
I am quite happy with great, almost surreal image quality. It is much better than several my friend had loaned me for my trip, but I don't recall which ones those were.
Nikon at this price is tempting, but Reviews on Amz say there are common problems with this model, i.e. with focus and prism alignment. So, I guess the question is, Are these returns and did Nikon acutally fix them? Or is this model not selling d/t problems and are these just being sold as "refurb"?

FYI- If you are looking to the night sky for astronomy purposes, think about the ratio 42/5 = 5.25 and compare it to your dilated pupils diameter in dark (~4-8 mm) . The closer is that ratio to the pupils diameter the better is to get all the dim lights of stars in your eyes!
So tipically 8x50 is good compromise with pupils dilated and zoom! 8x42 is little bit on the down size. Best is 10x50!!
How would these be for birdwatching on and around a river from a balcony?
At this price, they would be excellent.. I have the Canon IS binos and these.. I keep these on my kitchen window ledge and have done so for the past several years.. They are in direct sunlight several hours a day through the window and they have held up nicely and no issues.. I keep my Canon IS ($1300) binos in a special padded carry bag and had to have the outter layer serviced by Canon because they used a cheap outter rubber layer that gets real sticky no matter how careful you are at handling them.. ($350) later . The IS feature on the Canon is remarkable .. but not $1600 better than the Refurbed Nikos.
Incidentally Canon is known for the poor quality outter layer going bad and they do not admit to it.. A simple google search reveals the flawed product..

From that link there was this one.
On sale for $79 from $149 & has a 15% clip coupon.
Comes down to $67 before taxes, it got decent reviews.
These are good binoculars. Great deal for only $50, You really can't find anything new of this quality for the price. The 8x42 is perfect for birding or general purpose looking about, probably the most popular configuration in general.
Since these are porro prism, aka old school design, they will be heavier than roof prism binos. So if you're backpacking up a mountain or something or hiking several miles with other gear you may want something more lightweight.
If you want first decent pair of binoculars and don't want to spend a lot of money you really can't go wrong with these. I have several pair of Nikon and other binoculars. I carry some lighter weight versions for serious birding excursions. But I actually prefer looking through porro prism binoculars. They just seem to fit my eyes and face better.. I always keep a pair handy by windows where I might see something, or in the car for a quick look at something interesting.
The Celestron 8x42 Nature DX are an excellent choice. I have 3 binoculars, one is a decent Nikon now having trouble focusing. I bought the Celestron and am real happy with them. Excellent for 🦅 watching.
