There are pros and cons to the CJ603E model. From what reviewers say it handles what it claims to, and the best attribute seems to be it rarely clogs. That's huge because a lot of these electric chipper/shredders don't have the best reputation for robust use. The problem is it chunks into 1" pieces rather than shreds branches. Somebody described the waste as looking like wine corks. That's may be fine for some, but I was looking for something that actually shreds a little more finely. The CJ602E is the next "lower" model, and has a different cutting mechanism that shreds better. It also has a 20% off coupon, so it's only $81.10. I had a promotional credit of $15 (not sure why) so my final cost was $66.10. I just wish i had one of these a few days ago after trimming branches from a big maple tree. We lopped, and lopped what seemed like forever, then burned and burned. I swore never again. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

I have both and your description is accurate. I got the bigger diameter version when the smaller diameter died. I don't mind the bigger chunks as I spread them over dirt / muddy areas and they work similar to cedar chips but they just don't lay as flat or cover as much area per volume of wood, but whatever. I think the bigger diameter jams less and, of course, can handle bigger pieces. Really small diameter pieces tend to shred lengthwise and not get chopped up at all, but those can be chopped up by hand. One other point is that I think the blade on the smaller model dulls more quickly since it spins much faster and therefore has many more cuts per branch.

I may end up buying both, especially if I have a lot of tough branches, I may be better off using the SJ603E. For composting, I think the SJ602E might be better, but you're right, the 4000+ RPM speed and extra cutting will probably dull the blades much quicker. Replacement blades aren't bad though, at $10 to $12 for a set. The other downside of the CJ602E is it's very loud, earplugs are probably a good idea. The CJ603E listed here is supposed to be a lot quieter.

Less than 2" branches… you might get a decent pile of wood chips in about a year or so lol

I have the SJ603E, it is pretty ugly mulch. I purchased it mostly to cut up grapevines at the end of season, which basically it cuts it into .75"-1.25" pieces and splits them in half. It does well with thick branches, drier is even better, but fresh skinny branches (and leaves) makes a less appealing mulch. For me the value is being able to clean up annual prunings that would otherwise take weeks of filling my city compost bin. I have had very few issues with it clogging and it is pretty fast too, considering it's electric and small. I don't think you can get a good mulch without moving to a gas powered solution.

ive gone thru two electric shredders and IMO i would just go for a gas one if you can. It just simply takes too much time and even though this doesnt jam, you're so limited to the size and shape that it's frustrating. I hate throwing out branches just to go and buy mulch, and i love reusing my own waste.

but time is precious

Started out with the CJ602E. After a couple of uses the motor mount shattered. I was sent the CJ603E as a warranty replacement. The 602 makes much better mulch because it uses a blade to cut the branches. It does clog pretty easily, though. The 603 can handle bigger branches and doesn't clog anywhere near as much. It's also built better. The output is definitely chunkier because it uses a gear to crush the branches. Neither model does well with small twigs, and they won't do anything to leaves. Neither model is going work well if you have a lot to do. They're meant for cleaning up after pruning or some small dead fall from a storm.

For those of you who have either, my dad has mesquite with vicious thorns (about the size of nails). Would one or both at least render the thorns more harmless?
