Interesting, but from the reviews, it sounds like the drives get super hot if you're using enterprise drives. I would avoid.

Read the bad ratings. Not a good product.

Looking at the reviews it appears that if you want to cook your drives to death, and spend money doing it, this is a reasonable option.

noob question here - i realize this is not a NAS and likely doesnt function like Synology or such - anything that is similar to that but not so expensive? I would like good backup options for family computers (PC and MAC, maybe devices) that is simple to setup and use. Appreciate the insights.

Look up FreeNAS/TrueNas, they have opensource releases and this should work fine for your use-case. It has 2 fans, those complaining about it running hot, likely are using it for different purposes.

8 drives on one usb 3.0 channel might bottleneck your system.

Really depends on your use case.

Are you using this for backup storage? Then it's unlikely you're trying to write / read multiple drives at once. Using it for Plex? Again unlikely to bottleneck.

Using it for photo or video editing where you have files across multiple drives? Yeah, might not be for you.

Where will you get 2.5 drives? Everything above 2Tb is SMR.

At this price point, you might as well get a used 2u server with 12 bays for around 100-200 on the marketplace.

2u server
pros
12/24 bays, great cooling, great connectivity, independent, software/hardware raid, and can be used as anything (Nas, plex, etc)
cons
more expensive on power/electricity, but can be lowered and managed by using ULV CPUs and other hardware, and software.

This enclosure
Pros
Slightly cheaper, better power/electricity usage
Cons
8 bays, cooks HDD, requires a PC to operate, only USB 3 for connectivity, 0 hardware support/protection.

I think you're on the right track... Without looking too far into this, I think you can get an SAS controller with the appropriate cables and build a whole machine with a case and fans for about what this would cost... probably less...

Was thinking about getting this for all my 500GB drives from the 2000's era. Only issue is they get really hot!

2U servers are generally really loud. Sometimes you can make them manageable, but it's still annoying. Also, they take up a lot of space and you either need a rack or a large surface you're not using for anything else to set it on.
