I get the temptation to give that extra 256GB some weight. But.. let's get real. This is a desktop. You can put together a 2TB thunderbolt drive in the $200 range. Or 1TB USB for $80ish.

So go for the m2/3 with 256GB internal instead?
Neither, go for 16GB RAM as RAM can't be upgraded or added externally. Get more RAM if possible and use external NVMe drive enclosures for more storage.

The problem is we all know that and Apple knew yet still refused to put 16gb on base models, so they would never go on sale.
On the side note, that woot sale page has the 2017 27-in 5K iMac for $550 which is not bad if can tinker with it, considering the screen is worth $300+, and you can easily add RAM (nvme SSD too but not as easily).

Link to the iMac? I recently picked up one on Facebook marketplace for $500. I think it can be had over there for less than that amount. CPU, storage, and RAM all upgradable, although you need to be careful about opening it up via screen removal for CPU and storage upgrades.
Also you can install Sonoma using OCLP. I am even using it as a second monitor with my work MacBook using AirPlay and TB cable connected; albeit AirPlay seems best at 1080p for smooth experience

here's all the sales: https://computers.woot.com/plus/a...omputers-9
Yes I think those iMac sales are mostly due to losing new OS support, but OCLP works perfectly fine for my 2015 iMac.
Have you tried wired AirPlay via thunderbolt cable? I think it would do 4k60hz.
Don't waste your money on older, soon to be discontinued Intel Macs, even iMacs for $500. You use a Mac to not have to deal with driver or updates ruining your workstation. Plus even the latest i7 / i9 MacBooks seem sluggish compared to the M1 Macs.
You'd be better off getting the Mac Mini from OP. Either M1 256gb $450 or 512gb for $500 and using a decent $200-$300 screen depending on if you want QHD or UHD. It'll beat that old iMac in every metric and have years of updates left.

It will beat in performance but not if you consider both performance and screen quality. There is not a single non Apple monitor out there that can match the quality and specs of 5k retina.

Yes actually I meant TB connection earlier not USB. It does do 4k but not hidpi. 1080p is the best hidpi resolution I've found (which in reality is 4k with macOS scaling it down 50% for hidpi)
Is the M1 max better than M2 pro or M3 (probably soon to be released) Mac mini? Thinking about pairing this will external SSD to help get as many years out of my next Mac as possible. I'm using a 2014 mac mini that I installed a SSD a couple of years ago to make it limp along but ready to move on.

Don't skimp on RAM on these things -- it's all soldered down
Or better to get this from Apple: https://www.apple.com/shop/produc...fa4edc

Not a power user. Mainly interested in longevity.
