I'm kind of with you. I have several Battles, and they're good reels but the Spinfisher is sealed up better, and will last longer in a salt environment, but I appreciate the OP putting a nice reel deal up here. If I didn't have too many reels already, I would jump on this.

I know this is a deal's site but can any kind soul suggest what are the things I need to have to go finishing once or twice a month? We live in midwest and my wife recently suggested that she wants to start going finishing once in a while. I would love to get some gear and get into it. TIA!

I would go to a local tackle shop where you intend to fish and talk to them. Where you intend to fish will have a lot to do with what you'll use, especially lures and bait. For the most part, rods and reels used won't be much different, except in size and quality, and what you intend to fish for will determine reel size. Spinning reels like the one in this post can be used in every fishing situation, but you'll want the right size. Fly fishing is a whole different animal, and I wouldn't start there unless you're sure that's what you want to do. It's bad form to pick the brains of a local tackle shop then buy somewhere else cheaper. If you ask for their expertise, buy something from them. You'll spend a little more but it will be worth it. I worked in a tackle shop for a while and people would always come in, take your time asking questions, then go to Walmart to buy tackle. We offered free line on reels we sold. One guy came in and spent probably a half hour asking me questions about reels, then went to Walmart, bought a reel then came back and asked me to spool it for free. I couldn't believe it. I charged him to spool his reel then he realized he had not saved as much as he thought.

Secondly, there are tons of fishing Youtube channels out there. If you're in the Mid-West, you might be fishing the Great Lakes, so find a YouTuber's channel that fishes the Great Lakes or rivers and streams you might want to fish. That will show you the tackle they're using. I'm on the Gulf Coast, so I'm generally fishing saltwater, but I have a friend who lives in Ohio, and he fishes the Great Lakes and other local fresh water, and for the most part, he uses about the same spinning setup that I use for fishing in my local bay.

Thirdly, see if there's a local fishing forum in your area or a Facebook page dedicated to fishing your area. There almost always is something, a forum, a FB page, some other online resource, for every area where people fish.

Fourthly, when you go to the local tackle shop, see if you can find a charter who will take you for a fee. It's worth it to go with someone who knows what they're doing. You can ask them questions about the gear and baits and see where they go. I've been fishing my whole life and I still do charters every now and then. It's nice to be able to go fishing without having to do all the work. Usually they'll even clean the fish for you, but keep in mind, it's customary to tip, and doing so, will encourage the charter to do a good job for you if you use them again.

Hope all that helps. Good luck!

Going to echo that your best advice will come from the local tackle shops. I primarily fish the ocean and my gear and knowledge would be fairly irrelevant to your geography.

I'm also jealous that your wife initiated the idea of fishing. Good luck out there!

I will note, the drag on this is 15lbs. Good for smaller fish. But, if you're targeting rays or sharks in the surf, you'll want to size up.

It all depends on the finish you're after. You're probably going to want to sand up at around 240 grit at least. You'll want some respirators for sure.
