For me it was fun up until a certain point. It wasn't impossible, but it did induce a decent amount of rage for me. The difficulty increase is very sharp. It does run well and all that. I would say it is worth this price.

I second the opinion above. I've ragequitted a handful of times due to the sudden difficulty. I still enjoyed most of it but the ragequit I've experienced was something else.
I recommend grabbing the Game of the Year Edition in particular since the base game has a bunch of microtransactions/grinding to do.
I have it for Xbox. It's a good racer, but only if you're willing to put in a lot of time. Difficulty is way more punishing than it should be for a license attached to a kids toy.
But... I have to say with the GOY edition, the licensed cars included are amazing.

My 7yo has alot of trouble with it. It's very easy to go off of the track. I find it fun, but my switch version (physical copy) had a game killing failure after a couple of days that requires reinstall and total loss of progress. I bought the steam version after that

I had the same experience playing on PS5. I actually kept going until I completed the game and this was as pretty damn close to impossible as it gets. I like a challenge, but this wasn't what this was. This was just a grind to shave off a few milliseconds for all of the final tracks. I had way more fun beating Cuphead, for example.
Like you said, it's fun up until a certain point. Local 2 player would probably be awesome if you have someone to play with.
The sequel is available on GamePass right now, but I refuse to even look at it. They lost me with the first one. Even with everything unlocked and opened, I doubt I'll ever turn it on again.

What I gather is... not for a 5 year old
