I'm looking for a machine to sew up holes in socks. Would this fit the bill? Also hoping to do some basic hemming and adjusting shirt lengths. I hope some SDers can help me by giving me some advice. Thank you.

Bernina makes very durable sewing machines that are built to last. They're one of the few manufacturers that uses steel parts instead of plastic. I have three at home, the oldest from the 1960s. I would take any Bernina over a Janome or a Brother, but that's just my personal opinion.

I own (2) Berninas. A Bernette is a cheaper version. It may serve as a good way to get introduced to Bernina. The Bernina parts are metal. I do not "think" the Bernette is, so understand they are not the same. For this price, it is worth using and learning more on. If you decide to do more, you can always upgrade.
