How does this compare to the electric ones? Does it matter where u get the heat from as long as it's smoking the wood chips the same?

I have this one, if it's windy/breezy the flame goes out. I personally don't like the vertical smokers not enough room. If you're using all the racks at once whatever you have at the bottom ends up burnt.

Look at reviews, people buy insulation and wrap them

This was my first smoker, and at the time it was $99. Second one I buy will be a horizontal one.

I had one very similar to this. It worked really well, though I ended up switching to an Masterbuilt Gravity smoker. I only ever used this with propane. I switched out the wood chip holder with a cast iron pan that I modded by drilling holes in it and making legs with bolts and nuts. It worked really well for the years I used it. I filled it with pork butts, turkeys, and a number of things on many occasions. I didn't run into any of the issues others here mentioned. Admittedly I didn't use it in the dead of winter, but I did use it on plenty of cold fall and winter mornings and nights.

I own this one. Love it, can keep the temperature very consistent with ease and propane.
What you have at the bottom shouldn't end up burnt as one poster stated, unless you're running the heat too high and not keeping up with water in the pan. In fact, you need to rotate the meat, because the bottom is generally slightly cooler, if smoking correctly (remember, heat rises).

True.. but the heat source is at the bottom. And the hot air will cool slightly as it rises. The stuff closest to the heat source will be hotter, just plan for this and you should be fine.
